Item Type: Concertina
SummaryFull Description: An early and unusual John Alvey Turner 48-Key solid rosewood-ended English concertina, Serial No 11, with the "John Alvey Turner, Manufacturer, 19, Poultry" stamp on the frets of each end. There are no label or number cartouches in the fine-cut frets, instead there is an impressed John Alvey Turner stamp to the upper LH fret and the lower RH fret corner. The original black thumb-straps have gilt embossing around their edges, as do other J A T concertinas in the Collection. The ivory accidental keys are both Black- and Blue-stained for sharps and flats. Square-ended much tapered brass reeds, nickel tongues, and serial no 11 irregularly stamped on INNER face of pans. The reed-pans are stamped with all the note-names next to the inner tip of the reed-frames. There are internal stamps of "J Scates", and the trio of securing screws in strap, finger-rest and upper fret areas are of broad, slightly-domed form - all unusual features. The 4-Fold black leather bellows have "Bookbinders" fold to the bellows-frame, the bottom bouts of the bellows have the early silk-reinforcements, and show an appearance of the early "Gilt Circles and dot" papers. The Serial No 11 is irregularly-stamped on most internal parts. With original rosewood veneered case. Many similarities with the early Scates instruments in the collection.
